SPANISH CIVIL WAR: THE DEFENSE OF MADRID (version 2.1)
A scenario dedicated to the volunteers of the International Brigades

by Jess Balsinde (jbalsinde@ucsd.edu)

November 2, 1998

(v1.0 released Jan 21, 1998)
(v1.1 released Feb 16, 1998)
(v2.0 released Jun 24, 1998)

"The Moors who came with Franco want to enter Madrid
but as along as there are militiamen, the Moors will never pass"
		Republican Song

"Never forget, Madrid, the war; never forget that out there
the eyes of the enemy glance at you with the look of Death"
Rafael Alberti, "Ballad of the Defense of Madrid"

WHAT'S NEW?

(Section to be skipped by those who have not played any of the previous
versions of this scenario)

Not many things, v2.1 is just a slight update to fix a couple minor things.

a) The Nationalists are not disturbed anymore by having to build city
improvements. They now only build combat units!!! Needless to say, this
makes the Nationalists much stronger.

b) New unit icons for some pre-existing units. The Assault Guards have now
been dressed in blue, their true color. New pic for the artillery and a
new -but old- one for the Russian tank. New pic as well for the panzer.

c) A new city has been put on the map, Logroo, on the fascist side. This
city was an important strategical point, and it is so too in the scenario,
as it eases the communication between the Ebro Valley and the Castilian
plateau. Logroo is worth 1 objective point.

c) The intro text file has been shortened a bit. It now includes only one
fragment of the farewell speech of Dolores Ibrruri to the International
Brigades. Former introductory sentences for this scenario have been placed
at the beginning of this document (I liked them!).

e) All buildable units are now listed in the Civilopedia, including unique
units such as German Nazis, Italian Fascists, and Intl. Brigades.

BACKGROUND

In the dawn of July 17, 1936, the garrison of Morocco (then a Spanish
possession), rebels under the leadership of General Francisco Franco, and
this is followed by military risings throughout mainland Spain. Within a few
days, Franco's Moorish troops and legionnaires are at the gates of Madrid. At
first, the European powers agree to adopt an attitude of non-intervention.
However, the Spanish Civil War soon ceases to be a strictly Spanish affair
when large contingents of men, arms and equipment pour into Spain from all
sides. The rebels, autoproclaimed "Nationalists" receive considerable military
aid from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, without which they would have never
won the war. The legitimate government of Spain, left alone by the European
democracies, turns his sights into the USSR, from which it obtains materials
and equipment. Manpower comes in the form of International Brigades (some
35,000 men), who volunteer from all around the world to come to Spain to
fight against Fascism. After the initial successes of the Nationalists, the
territories held by both sides are roughly equal in extent. The continuous
attempts of Franco to storm Madrid and cut its railroad communications with
Valencia and the Mediterranean sea repeatedly fail. But it is only a matter
of time. After three years of heroic resistance, with shortenings of
everything, Madrid falls. With the fall of Madrid, the Republican forces
capitulate. On April 1, 1939, the war is over and Franco installs himself as
"Caudillo" and "savior" of Spain. The victory, but not the peace, begins.

INSTALLATION

As indicated above, this scenario will only work with Civ2 version 2.7.81,
i.e the one provided by the Fantastic Worlds scenario disk. Make a new folder
under the Scenarios folder. Call it "Madrid" and put all the files in it
except those files with extension .wav (cavalry.wav and custom3.wav) and
sndsetup.bat. Inside the "Madrid" folder make a sub-folder called "Sound" and
place the two .wav files and sndsetup.bat in it.

Now, you have to run the sndsetup.bat file! The following instructions teach
you how:

SNDSETUP.BAT is a little batch file utility which automatically sets up the
sound support for SPANISH CIVIL WAR, THE DEFENSE OF MADRID. It does this in
two steps. First, it makes copies of sound files provided with the scenario if
they are used more than once. Second, it copies and renames sound files from
the main Civ2 sound directory. This way the size of the sound files included
with the scenario can be drastically reduced.

How to use sndsetup.bat:
You can use sndsetup.bat like a normal program. Either run it by
doubleclicking on it in Windows Explorer, or by using "Execute..." in the
Start menu, or run it in a DOS box from the command line. If sndsetup.bat
runs into a problem (which is not very likely) it will let you know. In
this case you might be told to use sndsetup.bat with one or two parameters.
You will also be given help and further instructions about this by the utility.
With the first parameter you can specify the source path, usually the main
Civ2 sound directory. With the second you can specify the target directory,
which is the sound directory of the scenario. An example would be :

sndsetup.bat c:\mps\civ2\sound\ c:\mps\civ2\scenario\madrid\sound\
(The backslash at the end of the path is necessary.)

However, running sndsetup without parameters should work just fine if you
a) have the regular sounds installed in the main Civ2 sound directory and b)
sndsetup.bat is located in the same directory as the Madrid scenario.
If a) is not the case (because you have installed a ModPack or so) run
sndsetup with the path of the directory where the regular sounds are in as
a parameter.

These instructions and the batch file itself were prepared by Chris Schlobach
(uzsn8y@uni-bonn.de). Thanks Chris!

Now, you can finally play!!!

THE PLAYERS & SOME STRATEGY TIPS

This is (or tries to be) a 100% historically accurate scenario. That is, I
have set up the things for them to occur as close as possible to historical
reality. I am assuming here that you have decided to play with the
Republicans. Well done, that is the right choice to make. Your first, second,
third and last priority is to defend Madrid. If you lose Madrid, you lose
everything. Right at the beginning of the scenario, your foreign advisor (F3)
tells you that Republican power is supreme. Nonsense. Soon you will be
overwhelmed by the Nationalist troops, which are more and better than yours.
Try to hold on the belt of cities around Madrid (Brunete, Guadalajara and
Cuenca). Any of them will eventually fall. When this happens, Madrid will be
under continuous attack, especially if the city that falls is Brunete.

Dedicate your initial war efforts to control the Ebro Valley. This means
conquering the cities of Belchite, Zaragoza, Vitoria, Logroo, and Pamplona.
This way you should be able to establish safe routes between Catalonia and
Madrid.

Keep always controlled the railroad connecting Valencia and Madrid. There are
resourceful cities along the Southern Mediterranean coast whose troops may
alleviate the pressure on Madrid.

That's all I am giving away... I told you, this is 100% historically accurate.

If you decide to play with the Nationalists, let me warn you that it will not
be much fun.

It is absolutely pointless to choose the Portuguese. Remember, this is a
Spanish Civil War scenario. Moreover, the Portuguese units do not move.
The Portuguese are included only for the sake of historical accuracy.

RULES & VICTORY CONDITIONS

Research progresses at a 155/10 rate. Do not bother, in this scenario research
is pointless. Nothing that you could research would give you any benefit. This
scenario is an all-out war, you are supposed to have what you need to win at
the start of the scenario.

Also there is no point in building city improvements (there are not many left
to build anyway); you should dedicate every resource to the war effort. No
Wonders are available for building; all are already built. All of them, except
for Puerta de Alcal, San Lorenzo's Monastery, Plaza Mayor, and Cave Paintings,
are obsolete at the beginning of the scenario (I needed these four wonders to
keep the Republican spirit high and willing to fight!).

No diplomatic talks are allowed in this scenario. The Nationalists and
Republicans are always at war with each other. Nationalists and Portuguese
are allies (but do not talk to each other). No government switching is allowed.
The Republicans are a "Democracy", the Nationalists have a Fascist government
(Fundamentalism), and the Portuguese are a "Monarchy".

This is an Objectives Scenario. There are 91 objectives (cities plus Wonders).
In the beginning the Republicans control 42 of these and the Nationalists
control the remaining 49. The Republicans need 80 objectives to achieve a
decisive victory, and 69 to achieve a marginal victory. 49 objectives is a
Republican marginal defeat, and 35 is a Republican decisive defeat. It is
perfectly possible to achieve a decisive victory playing with the Republicans,
but it is not easy. Remember however that if you lose Madrid, nothing else
matters, you have lost everything. Uh! Almost forgot; the scenario is designed
for play at Deity level only.

The scenario begins July 1936 and ends April 1939. There is a total of 33
turns (only).

These are the cities that are considered objectives and the number of points
they are worth each:

REPUBLICANS NATIONALISTS
Madrid (x7) Sevilla (x6)

THE TITLE.GIF

The title.gif is an actual poster of the war, issued by the Republican Office
of Propaganda. It depicts the Republic (always represented as a woman dressed
in Greek-Roman style, wearing the Mural Crown) who holds the right arm of the
Republican soldier on the left. An International Brigadist is shown on the
right. The legend says: "The International Brigadists, together with the
Spaniards, fight against the invaders". The background, red-yellow-purple, is
the Republican flag, the official one of Spain until Franco changed it to the
red-yellow-red, which symbolizes the monarchy and is still in use today.

THANKYOUS

First of all, many thanks to Chris Schlobach (uzsn8y@uni-bonn.de) for the
sound setup file. Chris' magic file (and the idea beneath) is a huge space
saver. It will be implemented shortly in all my scenarios.

The map used in this scenario was made by Pedro Lpez Rodrguez. The Stukas
and Transport units are from Steven Strayer (The Fascist Patch). The rabbit
terrain icon is from Frdric Meuni. The Biplane icon is from Mats Georgson.
The Panzer icon is from Harlan Thompson. The Nationalist and Portuguese
flags are from Mike McCart (slightly adapted by me). I am sorry, I cannot
remember where I took the Nazi unit from. If it is yours let me know, so I can
write your name here.

The rest of new units and new graphics were either designed by me or adapted
from other Microprose scenarios. If you want to use any of the units that I've
created/modified, please go ahead, but give written credit, (that is,
acknowledge their origin somewhere in a text file just like I have done here
with the work by others), and do not remove my initials (JBR) from the
graphics!

Finally I would like to warmly thank the many civvers who downloaded this
scenario from the net and bothered to drop me a few words about it. I cannot
write here the names of all of them 'cause they may have been than more 30
people to date. Such an overwhelming response really flatters me -- I really
never thought this scenario in particular could catch so much interest among
the internet Civ2 community ("passion for WWII", I presume)

THE SAGA CONTINUES...

As you may or may not know, I am dedicated to flood the net with Civ2
scenarios about Spain, her history and legacy. Here is the list of those that
I have completed to date:
